The Brewster Police Department is mourning the loss of an officer who died after the shift

The Brewster Police Department is mourning the loss of an officer who collapsed and died after the line of duty early Saturday morning.

The department says 57-year-old Sergeant Richard Gurniak collapsed after completing his shift and hanging up his keys.

A fellow Brewster officer and two members of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office tried to help him. However, he did not survive.

Gurniak served two years on the Brewster Police Department and was a retired member of the NYPD.
