The Orange County Register is proud to announce the 2024 semifinalists for Artist of the Year. This is the 11th year of the program, which was developed to complement the annual Athlete of the Year honors.

Across the seven artistic disciplines – theatre, dance, instrumental music, vocal music, film and TV, visual arts and media arts – 112 semi-finalists were chosen by a panel of art educators from 892 nominees based on applications, performance videos, art portfolios, film samples and artistic resumes.

During the semifinals, students will be interviewed by a panel of leading artistic professionals and faculty from Southern California universities. Interviews include a live presentation by the students, followed by a question and answer session.

This year too, students are represented in two divisions. Divisions have been developed so that students who have not had the opportunity for additional training still have the opportunity to participate in the semi-finals. At least two Division 2 students are guaranteed to be invited as semifinalists. The two divisions are based on the number of years of training a student has in their art form. For example, instrumental students with five or more years of training in school and private lessons are placed in Division 1, and students with less than five years of training are placed in Division 2. Details on how the divisions for each discipline are determined can be viewed in: found here.

Of the 112 semifinalists, up to 28 finalists will be identified, four in each discipline, and at least one Division 2 student will be named as a finalist. In addition, one student from each discipline, seven in total, will be named Artist of the Year 2024 – the highest honor for this program.

The finalists and Artists of the Year will be announced in print and online by The Orange County Register on April 28.

An awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday, May 8, in Memorial Hall on the Chapman University campus, which is free and open to the public. During this event there will be performances and presentations by the best students.

This program is generously sponsored by the Chapman University College of Performing Arts. Additional support is provided by Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts and the UC Irvine Claire Trevor School of the Arts.
