Why aren’t we as happy as we used to be?

Many people point to social media as one of the main causes of the decline in our happiness levels. Dr. Manly says that while this is part of the reason, there are many other factors contributing to it, such as our loss of community.

“We are sociable creatures. We need each other, but we have become increasingly fragmented in our quest to be independent… It has eroded the beautiful interdependence that is the hallmark of any healthy, loving relationship,” said Dr. Manly.

How can we increase our happiness?

To create these much-needed relationships, we must start by looking at ourselves. Mindfulness should be an important part of our daily routine. Think about what you do that connects you both to yourself and to other people. Start each day with a kind and gentle attitude.

Once you get into that conscious state, you can turn to looking at your relationships. Focus on those that bring you joy and step back from those that are toxic. You don’t have to feel like everything has to be perfect.

“That is the beauty of imperfect love. All it asks us is to try a little harder every day to be more aware when we make a mistake… It takes the pressure off and makes the journey so much more wonderful,” said Dr. Manly.
