One dead and one injured following a shooting in Midtown Nashville

Nashville police are investigating a Saturday morning shooting that left one person dead and another injured.

The shooting happened around 2:30 a.m. Saturday in an alley between Hayes and Church Streets in Nashville’s Midtown neighborhood. The victims were 32-year-old Christopher Cheeks, who died, and a 29-year-old man, who was shot but survived.

The 29-year-old man told police he was in the alley with Cheeks and several other friends when three other suspects approached the group and tried to rob them. The 29-year-old said he was struck by gunfire and his group of friends, including himself and Cheeks, ran in different directions.

The 29-year-old was located on Church Street and was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment.

Cheeks was located in the parking garage of the Hayes Street Hotel. He was transported to Vanderbilt, where he died. Police say no one else was struck by the gunfire.
