Diamond Heels drops series to NC State on the road

The North Carolina Tar Heels picked up a big win over Notre Dame last weekend as they stayed hot this season. But last week was a different story.

After a tough loss to No. 19 Coastal Carolina at home, the Diamond Heels headed to Raleigh for a series against the Wolfpack. And they left disappointed.

The Tar Heels were able to salvage a game in the series, but held the lead in every game before blowing out late. It was a tough series, and one that the Diamond Heels really should have won as we inch closer to postseason play.

Game 1: NC State 9, UNC 8

It was a back-and-forth match as both teams scored runs in the first inning, with the Wolfpack taking a 2-1 lead after the opening frame. Both teams then scored three runs in the third inning before UNC was able to take a 5-4 lead in the fifth.

But the Wolfpack fought back.

NC State scored three runs in the sixth to take an 8-5 lead. Then it was UNC’s turn to respond by scoring twice in the seventh and one in the eighth to tie the score.

However, it was short-lived.

The Wolfpack walked a batter in the bottom of the ninth to win the series opener and build some momentum.

Game 2: NC State 5, UNC 4

In game two, it looked like UNC would come away with this game, as they led 4-1 after five innings. All they had to do was tie it up with the bullpen to even the series.

NC State rallied to score one in the seventh and then three more in the eighth to steal a game and win the series.

Game 3: UNC 14, NC State 3

Once again, UNC took an early lead in this game, but unlike the first two, they held on.

UNC scored five in the top of the third and then another in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead. From that moment on, they never looked back. UNC added three in the sixth and ninth innings, while scoring one in the seventh and eighth in between to save a game.
