Customers of Meals on Wheels in West Sussex received a free book with their meal delivery this week.

It is part of a joint initiative between service provider Health & Independent Living Support (HILS) and West Sussex County Council libraries to celebrate World Book Night on Tuesday 23 April.

As part of their regular deliveries, HILS added a quick-read book – Without Warning & Only Sometimes, by Kit de Waal – for some customers with meals on wheels in addition to their meal. Patrons also received information on how to become members of the library and other activities at the library, including their home delivery service, Home Library Direct.

Councilor Amanda Jupp, cabinet member for adult services, said:

“There are many people who can benefit from the wide range of services our libraries provide, especially those who struggle to leave the house.

“These include a home delivery service, library membership for community venues such as care homes and day centres, and a range of dementia resources, activities and events. This initiative supports our adult social care strategy by helping people build relationships and connections, widen social networks and enable people to live fulfilling lives.”

Rachel Pawley, West Sussex Field Marketer at HILS, said:

“HILS is happy to support these types of programs. Many of our customers are vulnerable and isolated and we know they can really benefit from additional services such as those offered by libraries in West Sussex. This initiative also gives them a great opportunity to start reading again. The books are printed in larger letters, which is ideal for our clients with visual impairments.”

Founded in 2011, World Book Night is an initiative to encourage more adults to read. Organizations, booksellers, individuals and libraries are encouraged to participate and public libraries can request copies of a selected book to give away to people who do not regularly read for pleasure or who have difficulty accessing books, reading materials and libraries.

This year the books are all Quick Reads, short books by well-known and best-selling authors. World Book Night encourages libraries to partner with other organizations to reach people who may not be library customers.

HILS (Health and Independent Living Support) is the UK’s largest not-for-profit meal service, delivering hot meals to homes in West Sussex 365 days a year.
