Ruby Street bridge closure in Joliet delayed – Shaw Local

Upgrades to the Ruby Street Bridge in downtown Joliet have been postponed until early May.

The bridge over the Des Plaines River was expected to close Monday, and signs had been on the bridge for weeks informing motorists of the closure.

The Illinois Department of Transportation will provide details on the new closure schedule next week, spokeswoman Maria Castaneda said Friday.

The bridge could remain closed for two months because it is equipped for remote operation, Castaneda said.

IDOT has equipped all five downtown drawbridges for remote control from a central location in Joliet along the river. The Brandon Road bridge, just outside Joliet city limits, will also be operated remotely.

The bridges are now, as they have been since their construction in the 1930s, served by tenders placed at each bridge. The new system is designed in such a way that the bridges can be raised and lowered from the central location.
