NASHVILLE – Southern Illinois Baseball jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back en route to an 11-1 victory Sunday afternoon over Belmont at ES Rose Park. With the win, SIU earned the series sweep over the Bruins and moved to 24-16 overall and 8-7 in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Heading into the third inning, Southern would put up a five-spot by taking advantage of three hits and two walks. Cole Christmas brought in the first run with a double to left before it Jordan Bach and Cutchen pushed over runs on a groundball and a sacrifice fly.

It was Justin Keuss who called out the inning for the Salukis when the designated hitter hit his first home run of the season to right field.

Southern added two insurance runs in both the eighth and ninth inning. Jake Allgeyer and Christman both had RBI doubles in the eighth before Mathieu Vallee earned a bases-loaded walk and Allgeyer brought in a run on a groundout in the ninth.

The bullpen held strong for the Dawgs Cole Koonce, Scott HarperAnd Cade Carter combined to allow three hits and a run over the final two and two-thirds innings. Carter made his season debut in the ninth for SIU, allowing two hits and striking out one Bruin batter.

SIU outhit Belmont 12-7 in the game, with Allgeyer, Vallee and Christman recording two hits each. Eight of SIU’s twelve hits came with two outs and seven came with runners in scoring position.
