New students hijack lobby with anti-Israel tent city in solidarity with ‘comrades’ from Columbia

Anti-Israel students from the New School in Manhattan hijacked a university lobby on Sunday and set up a “Liberty Zone” camp on the Union Square campus – the Big Apple’s latest protest in the Middle East.

The ramshackle sit-in came about as another larger, sprawling city took over the West Lawn of uptown Columbia University — where it had been dismantled last week, resulting in dozens of arrests, only to defiantly resurface.

As many as 20 protesting students took over the area around the New School lobby on West 12th Street with tents and signs.

“Action needed at the New School,” the group New School Students for Justice in Palestine posted on Instagram on Sunday. “Solidarity encampment in Gaza! Show up now!”

Another message added: “We are following in the footsteps of our fellow comrades at Columbia University.”

The protesters demand that the school begin “refusing cooperation” with the NYPD, protecting anti-Israel professors and “carrying out an academic boycott of the genocidal Zionist apartheid state.”

The students set up a series of tents, with one sign nearby reading “Deviation from Genocide Now,” while protesters posted banners on campus windows reading “Gaza Solidarity Encampment,” which can be seen from the street.

In an online post earlier Sunday, the student group said the New School had placed them on probation “as a registered student organization” until May 2025 for “violating ‘demonstration guidelines’.”

That means the group cannot host public events or use university resources — and that members must complete “university-administered de-escalation and peaceful demonstration training.”

Many college campuses have become hotbeds for anti-Israel demonstrations, including Ivy League schools like Columbia in the Big Apple and beyond, since the war between Israel and Hamas broke out.

Hamas terrorists launched a deadly sneak attack on the Jewish state on October 7, killing more than 1,200 people, mostly civilians, an act that sparked a counter-offensive against the terror group in the Gaza Strip that enraged protesting students.

Last week, a large anti-Israel encampment at Columbia University was raided by NYPD officers in riot gear, handcuffing and taking away more than 100 protesters.

Among those taken into custody was Isra Hirsi, the daughter of U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) “Squad” member, who was among the students hit with trespassing summonses.

The students returned and rebuilt the Columbia encampment less than 24 hours later.
