Flathead Co. Sheriff arrests kidnapping suspect after multiple chases

KALISPELL — The Flathead County Sheriff’s Office says they have arrested a suspect accused of kidnapping a woman Sunday. Officials say it happened after the suspect escaped custody following his release from a medical evaluation at Logan Health.

Officials believe the kidnapping originally began on Sunday, April 21, in Missoula. The woman who was allegedly kidnapped in Missoula jumped out of a car near Columbia Falls and then called police, the sheriff’s office said.

After the initial call to police from the alleged victim, another call came in stating the suspect was on foot near a railroad track. After a foot chase, the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office took 24-year-old Adam Whitman into custody for the alleged kidnapping. The chase led to the first arrest.

Whitman was transported to Logan Health Medical Center in Kalispell for a medical evaluation after the initial arrest.

After a medical evaluation, Whitman then escaped from police custody again, sparking another chase. Ultimately, Whitman was taken back into custody at Lawrence Park in Kalispell, leading to a second arrest.

Whitman faces at least eight charges, including kidnapping, robbery, escape, intimidation, unlawful restraint, resisting arrest, obstructing a police officer and assault on a spouse or family member, according to Flathead County Sheriff Brian Heino.

The Flathead County Sheriff’s Office told MTN they will work with Missoula County law enforcement agencies. For now, Whitman is being held at the Flathead County Detention Center.

The investigation is ongoing and no further information is available at this time.
