TV replays showed the scary moment a mechanic was hit by a wheel that fell off Pierre Gasly’s car after a pit stop blunder.

Gasly stopped about ten laps in the Chinese Grand Prix for his first tire change of the race. But it went anything but smoothly, because one of his tires was not properly secured to his Alpine.

And it almost had serious consequences, because when he wanted to leave again, the tire fell off the car and hit one of his mechanics. The Alpine employee was knocked over as colleagues rushed to put the steering wheel back on the car.

Fortunately, it didn’t seem to cause any lasting damage to the mechanic. The steering wheel was reattached, but the pit stop lasted almost 20 seconds and Gasly fell down as a result.

And the stewards said they would investigate the incident after the session with the prospect of a penalty. Teams are typically penalized for releasing a car that is in an unsafe condition, even if the wheels are not properly secured.

Although it was not Gasly’s fault, the incident summed up the Frenchman’s weekend in Shanghai. After the weekend’s only practice session, he raged over the radio: “Guys, this is not acceptable – I learned nothing! Absolutely nothing!”
